Episode 68: The Alcoholic

We tried something a bit different for today's episode. While reviewing The Alcoholic by Jonathan Ames and Dean Haspiel, we decided to get into the spirit of things with some alcoholic beverages. Listen as we discuss this serious topic with meandering conversation and slurred words. And the theme song for today's episode is Alcohol by Barenaked Ladies. I forgot to credit that while recording. Episode 67: Batman - Mask of the Phantasm.

Today we look at Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Directed by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, it's often described as the best Batman movie of all time and is definitely Sophia's favorite which is why we did back to back movie episodes. Listen as we dive deep into the underpinnings of what makes Bruce Wayne tick and why Hart Bochner plays such a great coke-head.

At one point I mis-identify the person behind the Folding Ideas YouTube page as Dan Larson. Folding Ideas is actually Dan Olson. Dan Larson is the guy behind Toy Galaxy. There are too many Dans.

We watch the noted Christmas movie Red, starring Bruce Willis, based on the Wildstorm/Vertigo comic by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. More than any other commentary episode, we go waaaay off the rails this time. Hangovers and colds don't mix.

Episode 65: DMZ.

We look at DMZ, the story of life in the midst of a modern civil war written by Brian Woods with art mostly by Riccardo Burchielli. It's a story with a clear sense of place and some very intriguing characters so naturally it was adapted into a soulless television series in 2022. We discuss both of those as well as the movie that essentially is a proper take on this source material.

Episode 64: Superman and Vertigo's New Titles!

A year after announcing a return of the imprint, DC has finally announced which titles will be coming to the new Vertigo Comics. They sound unique and interesting as Vertigo books should be. We then discuss James Gunn's Superman, the film that kickstarted the new cinematic DCU. It's less a review than a list of things we loved. Who was Sophia's favorite character? What was wrong with Metamorpho? Why is Colby like Jimmy Olsen? Listen and find out!

Episode 61: Starman.

Today we look at what is arguably the best ongoing superhero comic ever written: Starman by James Robinson and Tony Harris. It's a tale of legacy, familial responsibility, Art Deco and superheroics. Give it a listen.

Bedbugs mate by a process called "Traumatic Insemination". Look it up.

Anyway, this isn't a fun episode. It was difficult to think about, to record and to edit. Looking back, we probably shouldn't have done an episode that tackles issues of sexual assault. But this topic and this story are very personal and important to me. While it's worth discussing, I'm not sure if I'm able to provide the nuance needed for a topic like this and apologize deeply if any aspect of our discussion comes off as flippant. Sophia and myself have nothing but respect and admiration for those who have survived and thrived after something as traumatic and horrifying as sexual assault.

Episode 59: Mad Max! Lilac City Con! Pride!

After telling some stories about hanging out at Pride, attending the annual Lilac City Comic Con and almost getting "Hansel and Gretel'ed", this vertiginous duo break down the Mad Max Saga, including a 4 issue tie-in to Fury Road that Vertigo released in 2015. With a story by George Miller and writing credited to Mark Sexton (who also oversaw most of the art) and Nico Lathouris, this hard-to-find series fleshes out the world of Max, Furiousa, Immortan Joe and the like. Fun fact: It's actually up to about $300 on eBay right now! Happy hunting!
